David Bergantino was appointed the Auditor General for the State of Rhode Island in 2023, becoming only the fourth person to hold the position since the office’s inception in 1974. David graduated from Bryant College, (presently, Bryant University) with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (concentration in accounting), in 1993. After graduation, he worked in public accounting for two years before joining the Rhode Island Office of the Auditor General in 1995. David became a certified public accountant in 1996 and a certified fraud examiner in 2004.
David worked closely with two previous Auditors General for a period of 26 years before his appointment. He credits that experience and those years of mentorship as integral to his development as a government finance and audit professional. During that period, David managed the audit of the State’s financial statements for two decades. In addition, his other audit responsibilities related to managing the annual audits of the Rhode Island Lottery, Medical Assistance Cluster, and Children’s Health Insurance Program. David’s contributions also included serving as the project manager of the office’s audit workpaper software implementation, staff training, recruiting, office quality control and peer review processes.
David is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, in addition to their respective Rhode Island Chapters.
Since his appointment in 2023, David has prioritized data analytics, reporting on local governmental entity statutory compliance, municipality financial trend reporting, and performance audits in addition to the office’s significant responsibilities conducting annual financial and federal compliance audits.

The OAG employs a skilled, experienced and diverse audit and oversight staff of 38 professionals who are its greatest resource. Currently, our staff includes 9 Certified Public Accountants, 5 Certified Information Systems Auditors and 2 Certified Fraud Examiners. Several additional staff members have advanced degrees or other professional certifications. In addition, the audit staff is supported by administrative professionals, who assist and support all facets of the office’s responsibilities and obligations.
As required by Government Auditing Standards, all auditors must participate in continuing professional education programs and obtain at least 40 continuing professional education credits each year, the majority relating to governmental accounting and auditing. The OAG prioritizes staff training to ensure compliance with the professional standards required for conducting governmental audits. Membership in professional organizations is encouraged to allow staff to keep current with rapid changes in industry and related technologies.
